Wrexham director Shaun Harvey has revealed the Championship club aborted a \u00a319million January move for forward Sidiki Cherif.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Welsh club were linked with the 19-year-old last month, but it did not represent value within the EFL\u2019s spending limits.<\/p>\n

Sidiki Cherif attracted the attention of Crystal Palace and Wrexham before completing a move to Fenerbahce[\/caption]<\/p>\n

Cherif, who had impressed with French club Angers, joined Fenerbahce<\/a> instead in a \u00a321.7m move.<\/p>\n

In a bid to bolster their squad ahead of a promotion push, Wrexham<\/a> considered signing the Guinea-born star in what would have been a Championship-record transfer, only to U-turn on a deal.<\/p>\n

Taking no risks<\/h2>\n

Despite the wealth of Wrexham\u2019s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds<\/a> and Rob McElhenney<\/a>, adhering to profit and sustainability (PSR) regulations was the defining factor.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat being sixth in the league did was give us that scope to have the potential to spend every single penny possible that we had available under PSR regulations,\u201d Harvey told the Fearless in Devotion podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe (Cherif) was one that we looked at that was definitely going to be at the top end of the money that we had available.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I say available, I mean under the PSR limits, so you are limited.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter how much money you\u2019ve got, you can only lose so much in a three year period.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a look but the challenge with that deal was that he\u2019s a player that\u2019s on the up and it was going to be expensive.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had the money to spend, but the final analysis basically came down to that it didn\u2019t represent value in this particular transfer window.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spending wisely<\/h2>\n

Wrexham opted to spend their \u00a35m January budget strengthening multiple areas of the squad.<\/p>\n

The Red Dragons completed the acquisition of Davis Keillor-Dunn from Barnsley, while Bristol City<\/a> centre-back Zak Vyner also joined the ambitious Welsh club.<\/p>\n

Their final signing of the January window saw Sheffield Wednesday striker Bailey Cadamarteri arrive in a \u00a31m deal.<\/p>\n

Harvey went on to explain Wrexham\u2019s approach to the window with maintaining squad harmony at the forefront of their thinking.<\/p>\n

\u201cJanuary is never going to be a big transfer window,\u201d he said. \u201cWe took our normal approach and that was to look for those opportunities where they existed to strengthen the existing squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cPhil [Parkinson] has made his name at the club by keeping a harmonious dressing room as far as is practically possible. <\/p>\n

\u201cOn the basis that you can only pick eleven players to start any one game, there\u2019s always bound to be some disquiet at some stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut how he\u2019s managed that has been massively successful. It was against the backdrop of making 13 new signings in the summer window.<\/p>\n
