Africa is vast, structurally diverse and shaped by sharply different regional rhythms. Patterns of capital formation, consumer behaviour, regulatory development and exit pathways vary dramatically across the continent. Treating Africa as a single market does not simply flatten its complexity. It leads to mispricing.<\/p>\n

Nowhere is this more evident than in the contrast between North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, and in the overlooked opportunity emerging between them.<\/p>\n

North Africa has historically been outward-facing. Deep commercial ties with Europe and the Gulf have shaped how companies are formed, scaled and financed. Many founders instinctively look north and east, towards Saudi Arabia, the UAE or Qatar, rather than south into Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n

This orientation has produced relatively mature ecosystems, characterised by clearer regulatory frameworks, disciplined capital deployment and business models aligned with MENA pricing structures and exit expectations.<\/p>\n

From a venture perspective, North Africa consistently delivers strong deal activity combined with capital efficiency. Egypt, for example, recorded 89 equity deals totalling approximately $297m in 2024, making it one of the most active markets on the continent by deal count despite global funding headwinds.<\/p>\n

What North Africa offers is not immediate continental scale but institutional structure, a trait that markets often underprice.<\/p>\n

Sub-Saharan Africa presents a contrasting narrative. Growth here is driven by fragmented but rapidly expanding markets, where startups are building solutions for payments, logistics, energy, agriculture, healthcare and informal commerce. Expansion typically unfolds within the continent itself, across multiple currencies, regulatory regimes and consumer segments.<\/p>\n

The path is more complex, but the potential upside is greater.<\/h2>\n

In 2024, Nigeria led the continent with $520m raised across 103 deals. South Africa followed with $459m across 67 deals, while Kenya recorded $221m across 59 transactions. These markets reflect Africa’s demographic momentum and rising consumption. Yet they are frequently priced at a discount because of perceived execution risk, despite producing some of the continent’s largest venture outcomes.<\/p>\n

Across Africa in 2024, startups raised $2.2bn in equity across 457 rounds, revealing a market increasingly divided between early-stage experimentation and late-stage conviction. Seed rounds averaged approximately $1.6m, rising year on year. Series A rounds averaged about $5.8m, while Series B averaged $13.8m. Growth rounds approached $40m on average.<\/p>\n

More telling still, median late-stage rounds are globally competitive. Series B medians stand at roughly $29m, with Series C medians approaching $38m.<\/p>\n

The constraint in African venture is not the availability of capital. It is the challenge of cross-market scalability.<\/p>\n

That dynamic is beginning to shift.<\/h2>\n

The African Continental Free Trade Area is quietly reshaping the investment map. Intra-African trade reached roughly $192bn in 2023, accounting for about 15 per cent of total African trade, and continues to rise as trade barriers gradually fall and payment systems improve.<\/p>\n

Traditional sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture and infrastructure are building north-south corridors. Startups are following, often moving faster than policy frameworks.<\/p>\n

The most compelling opportunity today is neither purely North African nor purely Sub-Saharan. It lies in the connective space between them.<\/p>\n

A new generation of startups is emerging to link these two systems, building cross-border payments and foreign exchange infrastructure, trade and logistics platforms, supply chain visibility tools, digital B2B marketplaces and trade-enabling fintech. These platforms make it feasible for North African firms to serve Sub-Saharan markets at scale, and for Sub-Saharan champions to access North African production capacity, capital pools and export routes.<\/p>\n

This is where mispricing becomes opportunity.<\/h2>\n

The next generation of African category leaders is likely to be bridge companies, built on North Africa’s regulatory maturity and operational discipline, and deployed across Sub-Saharan Africa’s scale and growth velocity.<\/p>\n

North Africa provides structure. Sub-Saharan Africa provides demand. Investors have learned to price these regions separately. The next winners will integrate them.<\/p>\n

Africa should not be treated as a single market, it is increasingly becoming an interconnected system.<\/p>\n

Those who understand the distinction, and who allocate capital to the platforms that connect Africa’s regions rather than compete within them, are likely to capture the next decade of African venture returns.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
