Eni Aluko says she feels a bit \u2018gaslit\u2019 amid her ongoing row with Laura Woods and<\/strong> Ian Wright.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aluko has come under fire for her comments about Arsenal legend Wright<\/a> and punditry in the women\u2019s game.<\/p>\n

Aluko joined talkSPORT on Tuesday morning live in the studio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

She was critical of BBC and ITV\u2019s coverage of the Women\u2019s Euro final last summer, which saw England beat Spain.<\/p>\n

Both broadcasters had one male and two female pundits on their panel, leading to questions from Aluko why male pundits were given the opportunity over her and other former Lionesses.<\/p>\n

Laura Woods responded<\/a>, saying caps do not guarantee you a place as a pundit in the game.<\/p>\n

Now, Aluko joined talkSPORT and responded in further detail to the broadcaster\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n

She told White and Jordan on talkSPORT: \u201cI respect Laura\u2019s opinion and always have done. I think it\u2019s helpful for her to outline a lot of the attributes that go into a brilliant pundit.<\/p>\n

\u201cCaps is part of that, as I explained, it\u2019s not the decider, but it\u2019s an objective way to say this person has enough experience to talk about this specific game.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, it\u2019s interesting because Laura is one of the people I would consistently go to, we got on like a house on fire, I\u2019d got to her and say: \u2018How do you think it went? What do you think?\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaura consistently \u2013 and I had to look at the messages again and go hold on, I feel a bit gaslit here \u2013 said to me, \u2018I think you\u2019re a brilliant broadcaster, I think you\u2019re a brilliant pundit\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I think there\u2019s a little bit of serving an argument at this point, which I respect \u2013 she doesn\u2019t agree and that\u2019s fine \u2013 but I think there\u2019s an insinuation in there, that you don\u2019t meet the standard.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, I\u2019ve worked too hard for people to conclude that because you\u2019re not seeing me on screen, I\u2019m not good enough \u2013 that\u2019s not true.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former talkSPORT host Woods is just one person that has called out Aluko over her recent comments<\/figcaption>Getty<\/figcredit><\/figure>\n

Aluko added: \u201cShe mentioned about the camaraderie in the group, we had loads of that, that\u2019s the funnest part for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not the person that\u2019s difficult to work with behind the scenes, me and Laura got on, everyone gets on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jim White then raised the \u2018gaslit\u2019 comment again, with Aluko saying: \u201cWell, not gaslit, I don\u2019t want to say that.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has a view and I appreciate her view\u2026she mentioned about little boys being important as well, I agree, but when I see little boys coming to the games now, they\u2019ve got women on their shirts, they don\u2019t have men pundit names on their shirts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about being gaslit for a third time, she added: \u201cWell to the extent that I feel there\u2019s an potential insinuation there, that if you\u2019re sitting in the stands and not on screen then you don\u2019t meet all of these things that make a brilliant broadcaster.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut as I said privately, she\u2019s told me many times and reassured me that she thinks I\u2019m a brilliant broadcaster, which I will forever appreciate from Laura.\u201d<\/p>\n

What did Eni Aluko say?<\/h2>\n

The whole debate kicked off when Aluko appeared on the 90s Baby Show.<\/p>\n

The 38-year-old explained: \u201cLast year at the Women\u2019s Lionesses final, I\u2019m sat in the stands, I wasn\u2019t on it for ITV for the final.<\/p>\n

\u201cFara Williams was next to me. Fara Williams has 170 caps for England.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two broadcasters that had the rights, ITV, BBC. On BBC, you\u2019ve got Ellen White, Steph Houghton and Nedum Onuoha.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo offence to Nedum Onouha, nothing against him, I don\u2019t know whether he played for England or not. You\u2019re on the main panel for the final for England Women.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s go over to ITV, I\u2019m in the stands with 105 caps, so you have got two women with 290 caps, something ridiculous right. ITV, it\u2019s Ian Wright, Emma Hayes and Kaz Carney.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo out of six spots, two have gone to men, meanwhile you have got 290 (caps) sitting in the stands. I have never done a final and I am probably going to struggle to think of any woman, female pundit, who has done a men\u2019s major final.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am talking about as a pundit, so something is not right there. Why are people like me and Faz (Fara) not there? It is nothing against Ian and nothing against them, I am just saying broadly speaking we need to be aware of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aluko clarifies her comments<\/h2>\n

Asked about those comments, she told talkSPORT: \u201cI think it\u2019s more about clarifying and saying look, I think 270 caps represent experience and the insight you can bring to the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I wasn\u2019t saying is that 270 caps justifies an instant pick, of course, you need a skillset to be a pundit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe point I was trying to make is, that in women\u2019s football, my opinion is that where there\u2019s a choice, I want to see that level of experience on the main panel for women\u2019s football.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not at the exclusion of Nedum Onouha or Ian Wright, I\u2019m saying, can we have a situation where women are the main faces of women\u2019s sport and then the men play more of a supporting role.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat might be\u2026Ian Wright could do ten-minute hits before the game, a bit of colour, bit of context, then back to the main studio and bang, you\u2019ve got the faces of the game, whoever the three female pundits are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wright relationship<\/h2>\n

Aluko also spoke about her relationship with Wright and hoped they could one day reconcile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would love to speak to him,\u201d Aluko admitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t spoken to him\u2026I just think that, based on what I said, I don\u2019t think it warrants this, people have weaponised his name against me for the last nine months and I\u2019m a bit fed up of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve done all I can, privately and publicly, to try and reestablish a relationship, without having any skin in the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need to be picked at this moment in time.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cI apologise for the interview that I did where I said that Ian was aware of how much he is doing in the women\u2019s game and that we have to be conscious that the path for women isn\u2019t blocked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the sort of headline comment, that was what I apologised for\u2026that [the comments on Wright not using his influence at ITV] was nine before those comments when there was an opportunity for me to stay in the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will never find a quote of me saying Ian Wright shouldn\u2019t be in the women\u2019s game, people are trying to make that was this is.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I\u2019m trying to suggest is, is there a way that the main punditry spots can be prioritised for women, where Ian plays more of a supporting role rather than a main character role.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clash with Simon Jordan<\/h2>\n

Jordan laid into Aluko and took her to task over some of her comments.<\/p>\n

The former Crystal Palace owner said: \u201cThe language that you use, it\u2019s steeped in a sense of entitlement, the sheer weight of the entitlement that you appear to have would re-sink the Titanic.\u201d<\/p>\n

She replied: \u201cIt\u2019s an opinion, which we\u2019re all entitled to. I put value on them, everybody has them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to listen to a mob on X who have never put themselves in a situation to do anywhere close to what I\u2019ve done.<\/p>\n

\u201cI listen to the professional, the people who have hired me for the last 11 years, the biggest broadcasters in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy default, if I\u2019m working with the people who are considered brilliant broadcasters, if I\u2019m next to them, then by default I\u2019m considered also a brilliant broadcaster.<\/p>\n

\u201cI appreciate what you\u2019re saying, but in reality, I\u2019ve been good enough for 11 years and as I said, I\u2019m the person to go and seek out feedback, for someone to go: \u2018I think you\u2019re struggling\u2019\u2026it\u2019s never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura Woods\u2019 response<\/h2>\n

On Monday morning, Woods wrote at length message on X<\/a> in a seemingly pointed post about Aluko\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n

She had hosted ITV\u2019s coverage of the final in July, which England won on penalties.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cCaps don\u2019t win automatic work and they don\u2019t make a brilliant pundit either. The way you communicate, articulate yourself, do your research, inform your audience, how likeable you are and the chemistry you have with your panel are what makes a brilliant pundit.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019The women\u2019s game should be by women for women\u2019, is one of the most damaging phrases I\u2019ve heard. It will not only drag women\u2019s sport backwards, it will drag women\u2019s punditry in all forms of the game backwards.<\/p>\n

Aluko has now responded to Woods and her comments<\/figcaption>PA<\/figcredit><\/figure>\n

\u201cIf you want to grow something, you don\u2019t gate keep it. We want to encourage little boys and men to watch women\u2019s football too, not just little girls and women. And when they see someone like Ian Wright taking it as seriously as he does \u2013 they follow suit. That\u2019s how you grow a sport.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere\u2019s a picture of our team at ITV. We won best production at the Broadcast Sport Awards 2025 for our coverage of the women\u2019s Euros. Seb Hutchinson won best commentator too. So I think ITV got it just right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eni Aluko statement<\/h2>\n

Aluko then responded to Woods in a statement shared with talkSPORT<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI respect Laura\u2019s opinion as I have always done. For 11 years I have worked alongside the likes of Laura and all those considered the best pundits in the game. It\u2019s therefore clear I was considered one of the best too if I was part of the same punditry team<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one who has ever hired me as a pundit has said I wasn\u2019t good enough or did not have all the attributes Laura referred to. Quite the contrary. I believe that women\u2019s football should prioritise women as the faces of the sport \u2013 it\u2019s as simple as that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think women should be the dominant force in the women\u2019s game in the same way that men are the dominant force in the men\u2019s game. That means men should play more of a supporting role.<\/p>\n
