Martin Keown has claimed Manchester City\u2019s victory over Liverpool will be \u2018healthier\u2019 for Arsenal\u2019s title charge in the long run.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Gunners<\/a> looked set to open up a nine-point lead at the Premier League summit on Sunday, before City pulled off a late comeback to beat the Reds 2-1 at Anfield<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mikel Arteta<\/a>\u2018s side cruised to a 3-0 win over Sunderland<\/a> on Saturday to boost their bid for a first league triumph since 2004.<\/p>\n

This piled the pressure on the Citizens, who needed to respond with a result against Liverpool<\/a> to cut the gap at the top back to six points.<\/p>\n

And it looked as though Arne Slot\u2019s side had done Arsenal a favour, as they took a late lead against City through Dominik Szoboszlai<\/a>\u2018s stunning free-kick.<\/p>\n

However, a late equaliser from Bernardo Silva<\/a> and a stoppage-time Erling Haaland<\/a> penalty saw Pep Guardiola<\/a>\u2018s side steal the points.<\/p>\n

The turnaround means City can reduce the Gunners\u2019 lead to just three points with victory over Fulham<\/a> on Wednesday, with the league leaders not in action against Brentford<\/a> until the following evening.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was always alive\u2019<\/h2>\n

Most pundits felt Man City had only just salvaged their title hopes alive with their dramatic win against Liverpool.<\/p>\n

But Arsenal legend Keown<\/a> argued that a nine-point lead would have heaped pressure on his old club, who have faced continued questions over their mentality after finishing as Premier League runners-up in the last three seasons.<\/p>\n

He told talkSPORT: \u201cYou think about the game before and you think: \u2018Okay, if it goes to nine points, then we know the narrative will be that Arsenal are champions\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I actually thought to myself, maybe it\u2019s better that City win this game, just to keep it real. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re a prospective champion, this is the life that you have to lead. You expect the unexpected.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an amazing result for City. But Arsenal didn\u2019t lose this weekend. Arsenal won a very important match against a really good side \u2013 Sunderland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Explaining his point, Keown insisted that a nine-point gap would have once again raised questions over whether Arsenal could hold their nerve in the title race.<\/p>\n

The Gunners have faced \u2018bottling\u2019 suggestions this term, having previously crumbled in the latter stages of the 2022\/23 season.<\/p>\n

Keown said: \u201cMan City may look at this as a definitive moment for them in the title race and a win that has kept them alive, but it was always alive.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd actually, I think six points instead of nine is healthier because the narrative of Arsenal not being strong enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they go nine points clear, it\u2019s theirs to lose again and we get all that propaganda to try and keep this story alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Insisting the title race is far from over, Keown argued that Arsenal must prove their credentials by handling changes in circumstances.<\/p>\n

The three-time Premier League winner said: \u201cYou have to shut out the outside noise. It\u2019s about what you do, not what the opposition do.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course it would have been handy to go nine points clear but the fact it didn\u2019t happen, Arsenal haven\u2019t been derailed by that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually saw a lot from Arsenal at the weekend that made me think: \u2018Do you know what? They will go the distance\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut this is the life when you\u2019re trying to be a prospective champion \u2013 there are twists and turns. You stay calm and you stay confident, and you go to the next game.\u201d<\/p>\n
