The Senate may release records of how lawmakers voted on the controversial electronic transmission of election results, Senator Abdul Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central, has said.<\/p>\n
Ningi spoke on Channels Television\u2019s Politics Today on Monday, ahead of the emergency plenary session scheduled for Tuesday, convened amid mounting public criticism over the Senate\u2019s handling of the Electoral Act amendment.<\/p>\n
Asked whether Nigerians could be allowed to see which senators supported or opposed real-time electronic transmission of results, Ningi said such disclosure was possible under the Senate\u2019s rules.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s possible. It depends on the presiding officer because the law provides that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Explaining how the process could be made transparent, the lawmaker added, \u201cYou can stand up and say, \u2018I, Ningi, I accept e-transmission in real time.\u2019 I sit down. It\u2019s recorded every other senator, and that is the only way we need to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ningi said the controversy surrounding the amendment was partly due to gaps in the official record of what transpired during deliberations.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne thing that is very important is that the votes and proceedings have not been captured. So tomorrow, we need to look at what the votes and proceedings captured are. Is it a transfer?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He further questioned how the amendment to the electronic transmission clause was handled on the floor of the chamber.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was a motion for amendment by Manguno, and then the question was put. Who asked the question? Why was the question raised?\u201d Ningi asked.<\/p>\n
According to him, the matter required clearer deliberation before any decision was taken.<\/p>\n
\u201cWas it discussed? It is important that when you bring a motion on something that you have no idea of, one of the reasons why maybe people are not so happy is that the Senate President should have asked us as a committee, \u2018Please, educate us on this issue that this Moguna has raised,\u2019\u201d the senator said.<\/p>\n
The Senate is expected to reconvene on Tuesday as public pressure mounts for a review of the disputed provision on electronic transmission of election results.<\/p>\n
