The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has defended the enforcement of the ban on sachet alcohol, warning that easy access to the products is turning Nigerian children into addicts.<\/p>\n

Speaking on ARISE Television on Friday, Adeyeye said the agency\u2019s decision was driven by public health concerns, insisting that commercial interests could not be placed above the safety of minors.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are making our children addicts,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

According to her, manufacturers were more concerned about profit than the health implications of high-concentration alcohol products being sold in small, easily concealable sachets.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it is on their side that they are all about money, not about health. We are about health and good investments\u2026 But we cannot sacrifice our children on the altar of trade,\u201d Adeyeye stated.<\/p>\n

She stressed that NAFDAC was not banning alcohol entirely, but restricting its sale in small packages that make it easier for underage persons to access and hide.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not banning alcohol. We approve alcohol in different packages. It is only in small packages that we are banning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Tracing the policy to 2018, the NAFDAC boss said the agency raised concerns after discovering that some sachet alcohol products contained between 43 and 45 per cent alcohol.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat can be easily squeezed into the pocket of a primary school, secondary school child,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Adeyeye explained that an agreement was reached with manufacturers, under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Health, granting them five years to reorganise their businesses and discontinue sachet packaging.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all signed that by, after five years, they will not sell alcohol in sachets,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She disclosed that although the initial moratorium expired on January 31, 2024, enforcement was delayed following interventions from lawmakers and industry stakeholders, which resulted in an additional one-year extension.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe minister called me and said there had been some discussion, we should give one year moratorium, an extra one year above the five years that we have given before. And that one year expired December 2025,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Adeyeye said enforcement resumed after a directive from the Senate, despite renewed pressure from manufacturers for further extensions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Senate gave us the order to resume enforcement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She dismissed claims that warning labels could address underage drinking, questioning their effectiveness in the Nigerian context.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not use under 18. Do not use in Nigeria, are we kidding ourselves? Are we really kidding ourselves? In Nigeria? Who is going to enforce?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

The NAFDAC boss added that the policy aligns with Nigeria\u2019s international obligations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2010, Nigeria signed an agreement\u2026 that we will not make alcohol to be easily accessible to vulnerable populations,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Adeyeye also denied reports that NAFDAC had been served with a court injunction stopping the enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cNAFDAC has not been served. If we have been served, I have not been given that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Clarifying claims that companies were shut down, she said enforcement targeted only affected production lines.<\/p>\n

\u201cLines have been shut down\u2026 We are shutting down lines,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

She further warned of long-term health risks, saying early exposure to alcohol damages children\u2019s health.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you are frying your liver slowly with alcohol over time,\u201d Adeyeye said.<\/p>\n
