The Newport Bridge stands a majestic 219 feet above the Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island.\u00a0\u00a0 But on the evening of November 10, 1993, the bridge was the scene of a sobering discovery, the latest twist in one of the state\u2019s most sensational murder cases.\u00a0
\nShortly before 7:00 PM, a bridge supervisor and a state trooper investigated an empty car that was blocking one of the westbound lanes. The engine was running and the headlights were on.\u00a0\u00a0 On the back seat were several articles of clothing, neatly folded.\u00a0\u00a0 Up front, there was cash, cut up credit cards, and a driver\u2019s license.\u00a0
\nRobert Moorehead was the bridge supervisor on duty that evening:\u00a0
\n\u201cWhen I first got up there, I thought it was an abandoned car.\u00a0\u00a0 He checked the car and\u2026 that\u2019s when we knew\u2026\u00a0\u00a0 it\u2019s the Emery\u2019s car.\u201d\u00a0
\nMost anyone in Rhode Island would have recognized the name Emery.\u00a0\u00a0 That very day, Adam Emery, the car\u2019s owner, had been convicted of murder.\u00a0\u00a0 Though he was free on bail, Emery faced 20 years to life in the state penitentiary.\u00a0\u00a0 Now it appeared that Adam and his wife, Elena,\u00a0\u00a0 had found a way out of their impending separation\u2013by jumping to their deaths off the Newport Bridge.\u00a0
\n\u00a0It all began three years earlier, on August 30, 1990.\u00a0\u00a0 Adam Emery, his wife Elena, and another couple stopped for dinner at a local seafood stand.\u00a0\u00a0 It was just before 9:00 PM when a car whizzed by and sideswiped Adam\u2019s car.\u00a0\u00a0 The car then sped away and disappeared around a corner. Adam and his party decided to chase the vehicle.\u00a0
\nThe car they were chasing was driven by 20-year-old Jason Bass. Adam caught up to the car, and cut it off. He then exited his vehicle and began yelling at Jason Bass. In an unfortunate turn of events, Jason was stabbed once through the heart. He died before ambulances could arrive.\u00a0
\nThe tragedy of Jason\u2019s death was compounded by the facts that soon emerged.\u00a0\u00a0 According to Detective Hopkins, Jason never so much as touched Adam Emery\u2019s car\u00a0
\n\u00a0The trial ended on November 10th, Adam Emery\u2019s 31\u00a0st\u00a0birthday.\u00a0\u00a0 Adam Emery was found guilty of second-degree murder.\u00a0\u00a0 The judge allowed him to remain free on bail pending formal sentencing a month later. But by nightfall, Adam and Elena were dead.\u00a0\u00a0 Or so it seemed.\u00a0
\nTheir actions leading up to the suicide were questionable. They stopped by a sporting goods store and had dinner at a fast food place before stopping at the bridge. Actions investigators say are not typical of people intending to end their life.\u00a0\u00a0
\n\u00a0Months later the remains of Elena Emery were found by a fisherman deep in the Narragansett Bay. Elena had at last been found.\u00a0\u00a0 But to date, there\u2019s been no trace of Adam.\u00a0\u00a0 Perhaps, his bones are deep in Narragansett Bay.\u00a0\u00a0 Or perhaps, the day will come when Adam Emery turns up alive.\u00a0
\nOfficially, the case is still open.\u00a0\u00a0 Reliable sources say there\u2019s no reason to believe Adam Emery ever committed suicide.\u00a0
