Raheem Sterling has been told the smartest thing to rebuild his career would be to sign for a mid-table club over an elite team.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 31-year-old is currently a free agent after his contract with Chelsea was terminated<\/a> 18 months early last week.<\/p>\n

Sterling<\/a>, who had been the Blues\u2019 highest-paid player since his arrival<\/a> four years ago, had not featured for the club since May 2024.<\/p>\n

Under Enzo Maresca, he was banished from first-team training<\/a> as part of the so-called \u2018bomb squad\u2019 at Stamford Bridge<\/a> that August.<\/p>\n

Sterling joined Arsenal on loan last season<\/a>, but started just four of his 17 Premier League appearances for the Gunners and failed to score.<\/p>\n

Fulham<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Juventus<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bayer Leverkusen<\/a> were among his potential suitors last summer, but the winger remained in Chelsea exile.<\/p>\n

Six months later, Sterling is now at liberty to sign for any new club<\/a> outside the transfer window as a free agent and restart his career.<\/p>\n

Raheem Sterling next club latest<\/h2>\n

talkSPORT understands the 82-cap England international is in talks with clubs in England and across Europe about a potential move.<\/p>\n

It is also understood that four-time Premier League winner Sterling is most likely to join a top-three club on the continent.<\/p>\n

However, the ex-Manchester City winger won\u2019t be eligible to play in the Champions League<\/a> until next season at the earliest after missing UEFA\u2019s deadline<\/a> around squad registrations for their three European club competitions.<\/p>\n

European football broadcaster Andy Brassell believes this could be a blessing in disguise for Sterling if he wants to return to the top.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there are two really big questions for Sterling,\u201d Brassell exclusively told talkSPORT.com. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does he want out of the short term? That\u2019s the biggest question.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the second question is how much of that brilliant player that was a huge part of [Gareth] Southgate\u2019s England, that was a huge part of Guardiola\u2019s Man City, but maybe not acknowledged as much, how much of that player is actually left?<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not quite in the Paul Pogba zone yet, but we\u2019re definitely at a point where we can\u2019t say with any certainty what Raheem Sterling is as a footballer at this point on this day. <\/p>\n

\u201cNot what he\u2019s been throughout his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know what he\u2019s been throughout his career, and he\u2019s been brilliant, but is he still that player?<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact is, he\u2019s not played for long enough that we simply don\u2019t know\u2026 that is really what\u2019s affecting the market for him at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Raheem Sterling to Union Berlin<\/h2>\n

Napoli are among the several European clubs interested in Sterling<\/a>, as revealed by talkSPORT reporter Ben Jacobs last week.<\/p>\n

The former Liverpool starlet was widely reported to have declined an approach from Bayern Munich to sign him last summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, I think if we think of it both emotionally and status-wise, we think that those clubs that you\u2019ve reeled off there are Raheem Sterling\u2019s bag,\u201d Brassell added. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut one of the most interesting things on transfer deadline day was the sporting director of Union Berlin, Horst Helt, saying that he\u2019d been offered Raheem Sterling and put Union Berlin. <\/p>\n

\u201cAt the time, I think he was a bit blindsided by it. He\u2019s like, \u2018Is this a joke? This is Raheem Sterling. We can\u2019t afford anything like that\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut of course, Raheem Sterling, depending on how much money he was prepared to leave on the table, could play for anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite Heldt\u2019s claim, talkSPORT understands no one from Sterling\u2019s camp had offered the former Three Lions talisman to Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sterling \u2018looking at a sort of salvage project\u2019<\/h2>\n

The Bundesliga side sit ninth in the table this season, 11 points outside the European places, but ten above the relegation zone.<\/p>\n

And while Sterling\u2019s next side won\u2019t be Union, Brassell argued that a club in a similar situation should be the sort of project that appeals.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI would be astonished if he played in the Champions League for any club between now and the end of the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this point, you\u2019re looking at a sort of salvage project. To salvage as much as you can of the brilliant player that he was before. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut all those teams that are postulating for the Champions League or postulating to get into the Champions League, they haven\u2019t got time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey haven\u2019t got time really to bring him back, to condition him to match level and then to get him into the team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI reckon if you sign him now, even if he can recover most of his previous powers, you\u2019re not seeing that for six to eight weeks, are you? <\/p>\n

\u201cIt goes back to what Giovanni Manna, the sporting director of Napoli, was saying<\/a> going back a month or so. We know he\u2019s a great player, but A, money, and there\u2019s still that perception that it\u2019s going to cost a lot to get him on.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil his agent says or he says, we don\u2019t know how much he\u2019s asking for; there\u2019s still that perception, certainly from a distance within the game, that it\u2019s going to cost a lot in wages.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we have to assume at the moment that he hasn\u2019t come down that much from what he was on at Chelsea. <\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe the payoff gives him latitude to take a bit of pay cut, like Marcus Rashford<\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other concern, as outlined by Manna, is how long it\u2019s going to take him to get fit. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat perception that he will not be able to contribute immediately, that\u2019s why he hasn\u2019t signed for a club in January, basically, because there\u2019s not that feeling that he can contribute immediately. <\/p>\n

\u201cNow, it\u2019s different, say, if you\u2019re an Union Berlin or if you\u2019re a Fulham, for example.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you can say, \u2018We can take our time with you, get yourself in the right place, and then let\u2019s see what you can still contribute.\u2019 And that to me makes the best sense.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat would be the best sense all around? If he were to take an enormous pay cut, if he were to sign for a club that is kind of somewhere in the middle with no immediate threat of relegation, but probably not going to make Europe as well, where he can build towards a point where he plays regular games, and we can see what he can still do. <\/p>\n

\u201cRealistically, I don\u2019t think he\u2019s going to do that in six months or less than six months until the end of the season. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo, to sign him until the end of the season would be an exercise in futility to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat would be the smartest thing all around, the biggest show of faith all around? If he were to sign with that sort of club in the middle, whoever it might be, for like 18 months. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo then, you get the rest of the season to get him back in serviceable condition, then he smashes it in pre-season training and goes and has a great season next season. <\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, that seems like the most reasonable and logical target.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut to assume that a Champions League club or a Champions League hopeful club is going to have that sort of patience, it feels really unlikely to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough a lot of circumstances that aren\u2019t entirely his own fault, a lot of those bridges have been burned. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo, the problem he\u2019s got at the moment is that an elite club doesn\u2019t really want to take a chance on him because they feel it\u2019s too far off in the distance, what he\u2019s able to do. <\/p>\n
