Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson refused to rule out a move away from St James\u2019 Park.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, he reiterated the famous venue\u2019s location right in the heart of the city centre is what makes it \u2018such a special place\u2019.<\/p>\n

Newcastle have been roared on by their supporters at St James\u2019 Park for over a century[\/caption]<\/p>\n

St James\u2019 Park has been Newcastle\u2019s<\/a> home since 1892 and boasts a capacity of almost 53,000.<\/p>\n

But its last refurbishment was complete in 2000.<\/p>\n

The lack of updates since, coupled with Newcastle\u2019s ambitions to become a global powerhouse in football, points to a redevelopment in the near future.<\/p>\n

It is evident that will come in the form of an expansion on the current setting or via a shiny new venue.<\/p>\n

Stick or twist?<\/h2>\n

Despite the possibilities, Hopkinson, who was appointed to the role last September, conceded they are still yet to decide on which path to go down.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe truth is, we haven\u2019t decided,\u201d Hopkinson exclusively told talkSPORT.<\/p>\n

\u201cSt. James\u2019 is a magical place, it\u2019s going to be an extraordinary place on Saturday when we play our next match.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s 53,000, we think we could be bigger and that of course is revenue, a major investment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t made the final decision on what we\u2019re going to do here, we are working on this every day, deciding whether it\u2019s here or a new site, where it\u2019s a renovation or new stadium.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019ve got an opportunity we\u2019re pursuing and working on every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

St James\u2019 Park could soon fit how many?<\/h2>\n

Given the history surrounding St James\u2019 Park and the raucous atmosphere it can produce when the fans are in full voice, there is a school of thought that installing more seats is the way to go.<\/p>\n

But how large would that expansion be?<\/p>\n

According to Hopkinson, he believes \u2018at least 10,000\u2019 more seats could be created.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of our modelling and all of the capacity starts in the 65-68,000 range,\u201d Hopkinson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think bigger than that is good but we also want to think if we do something, it\u2019s material and significant.<\/p>\n

\u201c10-15,000 in here would be right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Hopkinson forecast a potential capacity of 68,000, building a stadium from the ground up would likely allow a higher maximum attendance.<\/p>\n

St James\u2019 Park 2.0?<\/h2>\n

Manchester United<\/a> faced a similar dilemma when deciding whether to expand Old Trafford or move elsewhere.<\/p>\n

The Red Devils have since opted for the latter, as they unveiled plans to build a \u2018Wembley of the North\u2019<\/a> with a mooted capacity of 100,000, which is set to cost an eye-watering \u00a32billion.<\/p>\n

Despite Hopkinson leaving the door ajar for a new stadium, he reiterated \u2018location matters\u2019 and wouldn\u2019t embark on the project for the sake of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think a new stadium is something we\u2019re considering, but not really moving that far,\u201d Hopkinson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want to be in some farmer\u2019s field out in the middle of nowhere. What makes Newcastle so special, such a special place, is that St. James\u2019 Park is right here in the centre of town makes sense.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverywhere that I\u2019ve worked, I\u2019ve had the privilege of having the arena or stadium right in the middle of town \u2013 it matters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere the new Bernabeu is, the renovated Bernabeu, Madison Square Garden\u2026 location matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every penny counts<\/h2>\n

Regardless of which path Newcastle go down when it comes to their stadium, it will hand them a tidy boost on the balance sheet.<\/p>\n

And when every possible profit matters in the race to close the gap on the revenue-generating machines at the top of English football, Hopkinson is under no illusion about the benefits on offer.<\/p>\n

When asked on needing to do something with the stadium to maximise revenue, Hopkinson replied: \u201cWe do.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoing nothing is always an option, I just don\u2019t think it\u2019s the most intelligent option. <\/p>\n
