Nutrition International has called for the acceleration of the rollout of Multiple Micronutrient Supplements for pregnant women, warning that delays could jeopardise gains made in maternal nutrition.<\/p>\n

Country Director of Nutrition International, Dr. Osita Okonkwo, stated this on during the 7th Annual Scientific Conference of the National Academy of Science, held at the Yar\u2019Adua Centre in Abuja.<\/p>\n

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Development Research and Projects Centre, the event was convened by the dRPC and supported by Sight and Life.<\/p>\n

Okonkwo said that the organisation\u2019s latest research findings showed that MMS adherence among pregnant women is approximately 75% in surveyed health facilities.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cThis is a clear indication that women are willing to use MMS when it is available. The barriers are no longer on the demand side; women understandthe benefits. The real gaps are in supply and health system readiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

With around 12 million pregnancies in Nigeria each year, Nutrition International emphasised that tens of millions of MMS bottles are needed annually to achieve full coverage.<\/p>\n

He added that local production is still nascent, raising concerns that momentum from pilot programs could be lost without urgent and coordinated action.<\/p>\n

Okonkwo also highlighted the critical role of state-level systems, saying, \u201cFor 2026, we must ensure that states can consistently supply MMS, provide proper counselling, and maintain accurate data reporting. Without this, the system will be overwhelmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe transition plan is well thought out, the evidence is clear, and women are ready. What Nigeria needs now is decisive, well-funded implementation to safeguard maternal nutrition and ensure healthy outcomes for the next generation, especially as donor support for MMS rollout ends in Q2 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other participants at the roundtable\u2014including the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the World Bank, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, CS-SUNN, Sight & Life, and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group- also echoed Nutrition International\u2019s call for proactive domestic resource mobilisation and stronger last-mile delivery systems.<\/p>\n
