The 68th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles was a weekend of high emotions, historic firsts, and a reminder of Africa\u2019s influence on the global stage.<\/span> While many of our favourites were in the building, the weekend belonged to those who broke new ground and carried the culture with pride.<\/p>\n

The weekend kicked off on a legendary note as the late <\/span>Fela Anikulapo Kuti<\/span><\/b> became the first African artist to receive a <\/span>Lifetime Achievement Award<\/span> from the Recording Academy.<\/span> During the Special Merit Awards on Saturday, his children\u2014<\/span>Yeni<\/span><\/b>,<\/span> Kunle<\/span><\/b>,<\/span> Shalewa<\/span><\/b>, and<\/span> Femi Kuti<\/span><\/b>\u2014accepted the honour on his behalf.<\/span> Yeni shared a touching moment, saying, \u201cI\u2019m sure my father is smiling down on us,\u201d as they celebrated the Afrobeat pioneer\u2019s monumental legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Sunday night, the celebrations moved to the Crypto.com Arena, where South Africa\u2019s <\/span>Tyla<\/span><\/b> officially became a two-time Grammy winner.<\/span> She clinched the award for <\/span>Best African Music Performance<\/span> for her single <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Push 2 Start<\/span><\/b>,\u201d <\/span>marking her second win in the category since its 2024 debut.<\/span> It was a tightly contested category, with Tyla edging out an incredible lineup of talent: <\/span>Burna Boy<\/span><\/b> (\u201cLove\u201d), <\/span>Davido<\/span><\/b> featuring <\/span>Omah Lay<\/span><\/b> (\u201cWith You\u201d), <\/span>Ayra Starr<\/span><\/b> featuring <\/span>Wizkid<\/span><\/b> (\u201cGimme Dat\u201d), and <\/span>Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin<\/span><\/b> (\u201cHope & Love\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

Nigerian-American sensation <\/span>Shaboozey<\/span> also had a massive night, winning <\/span>Best Country Duo\/Group Performance<\/span> for the hit <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Amen<\/span><\/b>\u201c<\/span> alongside <\/span>Jelly Roll<\/span><\/b>.<\/span> In an emotional acceptance speech, Shaboozey, who is of Igbo-Nigerian descent, paid tribute to his mother and addressed the current climate in the United States, reminding the audience that \u201cimmigrants literally built this country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While Ang\u00e9lique Kidjo<\/b>, Burna Boy<\/b>, and Youssou N\u2019dour<\/b> didn\u2019t take home trophies in their respective categories this year, the presence of African excellence was felt in every corner of the room.<\/p>\n
