In the first three months of 2026, African startups raised $705m across 59 deals in 14 countries, marking a 26.5% increase on the same period last year. Data compiled by Condia and TechCabal Insights points to a clear conclusion: the continent’s startup ecosystem has moved beyond its ’emerging’ label and is entering a more established phase.<\/p>\n
Egypt led the field, attracting $190m in disclosed funding and reinforcing its position as the continent’s most active market. South Africa followed with $157m, supported by deep institutional capital and a steadily maturing fintech sector. Kenya, long regarded as East Africa’s gateway for global investors, secured $94m, while Nigeria drew $78m despite ongoing macroeconomic headwinds. Morocco completed the top five with $48m.<\/p>\n
Beyond these leading markets, activity is becoming more widely distributed. Senegal raised $32m and Ethiopia $15m, while a further group of countries collectively accounted for roughly $39m. The spread of deals across 14 \u10e5\u10d5\u10d4\u10e7\u10dctries highlights a notable shift away from the traditional concentration in a handful of hubs.<\/p>\n
Sector momentum gathers pace<\/p>\n
Fintech remains the dominant sector, attracting $221m, close to one third of total investment. Growth in digital payments infrastructure and lending platforms continues to draw strong investor interest as financial inclusion deepens across the continent.<\/p>\n
Energy accounted for $141m, reflecting sustained confidence in Africa’s renewable transition. Investments span solar mini grids, off grid storage and related infrastructure, underlining the scale of opportunity in addressing persistent energy gaps.<\/p>\n
Logistics also drew significant capital at $149m, pointing to rising investor conviction in supply chain modernisation and last mile delivery solutions. Agritech, with $55m, and deeptech, at $33m, rounded out the leading sectors tracked during the quarter.<\/p>\n
Shifting patterns in global capital<\/p>\n
One of the more striking developments in the quarter was the growing presence of Japanese investors, adding a new dimension to capital flows that have historically been dominated by the United States and Europe.<\/p>\n
At the same time, debt financing is gaining ground in several markets, in some cases surpassing equity. This reflects a maturing funding landscape rather than distress, as founders increasingly turn to non dilutive instruments to finance working capital and expansion.<\/p>\n
A broader continental footprint<\/p>\n
The first quarter figures, which cover deals announced between January and March across all 54 African markets tracked by ABITECH’s intelligence system, underline a key structural shift. Venture capital is no longer confined to established centres such as Lagos, Nairobi and Cape Town. Cities including Dakar, Addis Ababa and Tunis are increasingly appearing on investors’ radar.<\/p>\n
This widening geographic spread is supported by strong underlying fundamentals. A young and growing population, rising mobile penetration and significant infrastructure gaps continue to create fertile ground for technology driven solutions.<\/p>\n
