Italian midfielder Edoardo Bove has a second chance at a football career \u2013 but insisted joining Watford is not a \u2018second choice.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

The former Roma star has been waiting to return to the pitch since suffering an on-pitch cardiac arrest<\/a> in December 2024.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old collapsed during a Serie A<\/a> game whilst playing on loan for Fiorentina against Inter Milan<\/a> nearly 14 months ago.<\/p>\n

In the United Kingdom, someone dies from cardiovascular disease every three minutes \u00a0\u2013 an average of 460 deaths each day.<\/p>\n

Five UK lives had been lost to heart problems from the start of kick-off to when Bove dropped to the floor in the 16th minute.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, the Italy U21 star didn\u2019t become another statistic \u2013 but a fitted cardiac defibrillator ended his playing days in his homeland.<\/p>\n

Roma released Bove from his contract as a result, and he signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with Watford earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m here because it\u2019s a very big challenge for me and it\u2019s a very ambitious club with one main goal, to go back to the Premier League<\/a>,\u201d he told talkSPORT. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo, the first reason because I chose this club is because I know that I\u2019m the kind of player that wants like these kind of challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an ambitious club that has an objective in the mind. So we are fighting for something, and we are looking to go to the Premier League.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, this was the first reason. Then, I spoke with the director, the owner, and everything was perfect.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven talking about the structures, the medical staff and that\u2019s a very important part for me and for coming back in the possible way. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo, these are the two main reasons because I\u2019m here and I\u2019m looking for, and I want to come back and play the games.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bove\u2019s story is becoming increasingly commonplace, with Christian Eriksen<\/a> having his contract with Inter Milan\u00a0<\/span><\/span>terminated by mutual consent<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>following the fitting of an ICD in December 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the Dane revitalised his career at Brentford<\/a>, and ultimately went on to play for Manchester United<\/a> and is now at Wolfsburg.<\/p>\n

Earlier this season, Tom Lockyer made his first competitive appearance at Bristol Rovers<\/a> in a 4\u20130 defeat to Crawley Town since he suffered a cardiac arrest<\/a> in December 2023 for Luton Town.<\/p>\n

Bove, whose Watford contract will run until the summer of 2031, could follow both in returning to action in four to six weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m confident,\u201d he added to talkSPORT. \u201cI\u2019m happy because we did a lot of visits and stuff like that, and they were all good. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing I want to say is I\u2019m not here because in England you can play even when you have a disease. It\u2019s not like this.<\/p>\n

Watford \u2018not a second choice\u2019<\/h2>\n

\u201cI did a lot of tests, and I\u2019m happy to be here and to play again,\u201d Bove continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Italy, now I cannot play because of these kinds of rules, but I\u2019m very happy to be here. It\u2019s not a second choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a challenge I wanted to take, and I\u2019m really happy to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bove had interest from the Premier League and Bundesliga<\/a>, including Liverpool<\/a>, Everton<\/a>, Brentford and Bournemouth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But on joining the Hornets in the Championship, he admitted: \u201cI had offers, but the thing is I want to play the more games I can.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have this kind of connection with this club. I needed a place where I was really happy and comfortable to come back. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are doing everything like it has to be done. We are trying to get me on the pitch as soon as possible. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are doing this with the staff, the technical staff, the medical staff. It\u2019s true that I want to come back but we have to calculate when and where. For now, I\u2019m really happy about my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2022, former Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> midfielder Eriksen told talkSPORT, \u2018If there was any anxiety I wouldn\u2019t go back [to football].<\/a>\u2018<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Lockyer\u2019s collapse during Luton Town\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Premier League clash against Bournemouth in December 2023<\/span> was not the first time the 31-year-old had had a serious medical episode during a match.<\/p>\n

The Welshman had\u00a0collapsed seven months earlier<\/a> in the opening stages of Luton\u2019s Championship play-off final against Coventry City.<\/p>\n

The midfielder told talkSPORT that he is not scared of another medical episode on the pitch<\/figcaption>Watford FC<\/figcredit><\/figure>\n

However, he has since made 14 appearances for Bristol Rovers since October, and Bove is similarly fearless about his own health.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not scared because I think my event happened at a perfect age,\u201d he revealed. \u201cI wasn\u2019t too young to not understand this kind of problem. I wasn\u2019t too old. I had fear of something to go back, but I\u2019m a very rational person. <\/p>\n

\u201cI heard a lot of different doctors, and we arrived to the conclusion that I\u2019m in a good condition and I can play without problems. I have to monitor myself, and that\u2019s it. I live these days.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned to live watching the present and not the future. I cannot wait to come back tomorrow and train again. Today in the morning I trained. It was perfect, and I\u2019m happy for this.<\/p>\n

\u201cTomorrow is a new day, and I will work to do the best even tomorrow. I\u2019m really happy to be back. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m taking this challenge very seriously, but I want to look day by day and do every step I have to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Watford<\/p>\n

\u2018Watford fans will really respond to him\u2019<\/h2>\n

Bove scored three goals in 65 Serie A appearances for boyhood club Roma prior to joining Fiorentina on loan in the summer of 2024.<\/p>\n

European football expert, Andy Brassell, told talkSPORT.com: \u201cI feel pretty sure that Bove would have been in the Italy squad if what happened to him hadn\u2019t happened to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s one of those guys that, despite the fact that he comes from a big club, he\u2019s not someone who thinks he\u2019s too good for any job or for any moment. He won\u2019t be thinking about it as stepping down.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe will be thinking about it as restarting a career that had so much promise. For him, I think, leaving Roma hurt a lot because it\u2019s his club.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor him, saying goodbye to Roma, as he did a couple of weeks ago at a recent home game just before his contract was officially cancelled, and then he went on to sign for Watford, of course, I feel that will be quite cathartic for him. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that he finally gets to turn the page from Roma, a club that he loves so much and where the fans love him so much and they always will, before any of this happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I think Watford fans will really respond to him. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf it goes well, and obviously, his health is the main thing going forward, I wouldn\u2019t put it past him to go up and, if Watford were to go up, establishing himself in the Premier League.<\/p>\n
